TOP SUMMER TIPS
Wash
the hair daily
Always
use a conditioner
Finish
with a sunscreen hairspray
Protect
the hair from chlorine as well as sun
Apply
a pre-shampoo deep conditioner once a week
Do
not brush the hair hard when styling
Use
an anti-frizz product - but sparingly on high humidity days
Apply
a leave-in protective serum on very dry days
Drink
plenty of water
Eat
lots of salad, fruit and proteins
Don't
pile your hair on top of your head - the ends of the hair are the oldest
and so need extra care, not direct exposure to sunlight.
Take
a hair treatment with you to soak into your hair whilst sipping on your
sundowner at the end of the day.
Avoid
overdrying with hairdryers, heated rollers and curling tongs. Instead,
leave hair to dry naturally but don't over-rub or towel-dry - simply pat
hair dry".
If,
when you get to the beach, you discover that you've left your hair protection
behind, don't despair - suntan lotion can be used like a styling cream
on both short or long hair and is also great protection for the scalp.
Moisture
loss is hair's biggest problem in the summer, so it's essential to get
hair in tip-top condition before stepping on to the beach. Begin a month
in advance by using good moisturising shampoos, conditioners and styling
creams to give hair a head start.
Get
your hair cut at the beginning of the summer. It is vital to cut away
the damage of winter and start off with hair that is in excellent condition.
When
in a sunny climate be careful not to rub the scalp too vigorously when
shampooing as the scalp's natural oil, sebum, will be cleansed away. Sebum
aids protection of the hair and prevents damage in the sun.
Anyone
with long or coloured should use intensive treatments weekly or fortnightly
to ensure maximum condition during the summer. For those who are planning
lazy days sunbathing, always use a protective hair cream with a UV filter,
and an afterswim shampoo too neutralise the chlorine from the hair.
Always
wet hair before going swimming and add a leave-in conditioner. This helps
to stop hair acting like a sponge for pollutants such as chlorine. Also,
wet hair is weak hair, so avoid elastic bands and accessories that bind
hair tightly - slick hair back with a gel wax or glass crème containing
UV filters instead.
Ensure
you have highlights at least two weeks before going away on your beach
holiday as there is a danger that hair may go green if you rush into the
pool to quickly! Also, when returning from the beach, wash your hair thoroughly
and on the final rinse, pour some bottled water over your head; this will
purify hair and give it some added shine and lustre.
Take
time when blowdrying. For the sake of a few minutes, decrease the heat
setting on your hair dryer; it will actually save you time as your hair
will dry far more easily. Always use UV filter products as sunlight is
incredibly damaged to hair, draining moisture from it and causing colour
to fade.
Clients
spend a great deal of money having their hair coloured to look great on
holiday, then will spend two weeks under scorching sun and swimming in
chlorine, fading the colour out. I recommend that the same amount of care
and money is invested in maintaining their colour by using specialist
products such as Bonacure Sun that protects hair whilst in the sun and
cares and replenishes moisture after sunbathing.
